Fort Boise Military Salute

Fort Boise Military Cemetery
Boise, Idaho

The complete Fort Boise Military Cemetery Database is not online yet. This information came from family members, early newspapers, or photos taken by David Habben and myself. (This web page was designed by the previous Ada County coordinator, Ellie Grover.)

If you have additional information on these or any other persons buried in the Military Cemetery, please share with us. We are particularly interested in photos, and would love to include any that you send us. If you have a family history web site, we would love to list the link to it. Please contact the county coordinator.

This Military Cemetery is indeed a quiet park, and is located in the foothills of Boise. The cemetery was moved to this location in 1906 after a flash flood roared down Cottonwood Creek causing major damage and erosion to the graves. The officer in charge of the move described the new location, about a half mile north, as somewhat "desirable" and somewhat "level." A total of 166 graves were moved.

Green only in the springtime, the rest of the year the ground is covered with short brown vegetation and sagebrush. Spring brings Memorial Day, and all veteran ceremonies are conducted in period costume.

Most of the graves are soldiers who served their country, and died in the Boise area. This cemetery also served as Boise's first cemetery, so a few of the graves belong to civilians.

There is a feeling of peace and calmness in the cemetery. You know that these soldiers served their country to make a better world for us. If they could see our lives, somehow, I think that they would be pleased.

These are photos of the cemetery itself, and Memorial Day ceremonies.
