A Tour of Joplin Cemetery

This cemetery has a very peaceful feeling, in spite of being right beside a busy state highway.

Another view, facing Northwest from the gate on the East side. We are standing in Section G, and Section F is in front of us further back. Almost all of the headstones that you can see in this picture belong to members of the extended Joplin family.

Catching the morning shadows, this view looks Southwest from the gate on the East side. We are in Section G, looking at Section E across the roadway, and Section H at the left of the roadway on the far left of the photo.

Still with the morning shadows, this offers a good view of the Maintenance Building, and Section E across the roadway. We are standing in Section G. The sepulchure in front of us is empty. It was constructed years ago with the purpose of being used, however the opening is too small to admit a casket. The stones are now begining to deteriorate, and it will not last many more years.

There is a pillar in the cemetery, containing four scripture verses.

The cemetery is located right on the edge of a sharp hill, almost cliff like. This is the view from the back of the cemetery (looking North), showing this narrow strip between the cemetery and the edge. It may be in this area that Joplin Cemetery's first burial was made. A woman from the Joplin family was buried in any unknown spot, and the cemetery was later established. It is likely that this first burial was outside the fence. In spite of being located in high desert, Boise is known as the City of Trees. This is a perfect view showing trees along the Boise River in the background.

This old truck has been parked at the back of the cemetery for as long as I can remember. Probably originally used to move the dirt during burials.
